Each term, students take part in excursions on Country, exploring different parts of our local environment. With every visit, they notice something new such as fresh plant growth, active wildlife, cooler air, or the quiet calm of winter. Over time, children begin to recognise patterns and changes, building a stronger understanding of the natural world. Children are supported with resources from our local landscape board to help identify plants, scats, and wildlife, building their knowledge and confidence in the field. At times, local Elders join us to share knowledge and stories, helping students learn how the Boandik people walked on and lived off the land.
Learning is strongly linked back to the classroom through a Learning Expedition. During this time, students explore ideas in greater depth and create meaningful project work based on their experiences. Each child’s learning journey is unique, with outcomes shaped by their interests and discoveries. In 2025, students created seasonal calendars, brochures, artworks, and reflective writing pieces that captured their understanding and personal connection to the environment.
This program is about more than just being outdoors.
Walking the Seasons nurtures the whole child.
Through guided exploration and reflection, children build:
- a deeper connection to place and respect for the land
- mindfulness as they learn to slow down and notice their surroundings
- confidence through outdoor exploration
- a sense of belonging by sharing the experience with others
Families often see their children become more aware, curious, and connected not only to nature but also to themselves.
Walking the Seasons is a simple but powerful journey. It helps children learn to notice, reflect, and feel part of the world around them.
